National Allergy Day 2015

July 8 is National Allergy Day (NAD). It was officially promulgated in 2006 by then-President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo via Presidential Proclamation #978 s2006  to increase the awareness of Filipinos in the growing problems of allergies among adults and children. It was celebrated for the first time that year under the leadership of PSAAI president Dr Hiyas Lim. In 2007, when Dr Florecita Padua was PSAAI president, Presidential Proclamation #1313 s2007 declared "July 8, 2007 and every year thereafter as 'National Allergy Day'.”

This year, the Philippine Society of Allergy, Asthma and Allergy celebrated the NAD with the theme “Save Mother Earth and Help Control Your Allergies,” last July 5, 2015 at Fisher Mall in Quezon Avenue, Quezon City.

The organizing committee, headed by Dr. Vicky Biñas prepared a lot of exciting and educational games, prizes, and freebies for more than 500 participants eager to learn more about their allergies. The program was hosted by entertainer / comedian Roden Araneta and Dr. KG Gutierrez. A lecture about the “Climate Change and Allergies” was delivered by Dr. Frances Tan. Dr. Eric Tayag of the Department of Health graced the occasion with 2 dance numbers that led the audience up on their feet. A ventriloquist, Kuya Onie and his puppet Kulas entertained the children in the audience with their allergic rhinitis spiel alongside Dr. Shirley Kwong-Buizon.

Exhibits around the activity area of the Fisher Mall showcased different allergy medications, gadgets, diagnostic tests and home devices to prevent allergies. Free allergy consultation and free allergy skin prick testing drew a long line among the participants.

NAD is also celebrated in the different parts of the country like in Lipa, Batangas, Baguio City, Bacolod City, Roxas City, Cebu City and Davao City. On July 12, a Fun Run will take place in the UST Grandstand in Manila and on July 19, there will be Tree Planting in Pampanga State University in Pampanga.
